What is Rajana? | Print |

Rajana was set up in 1995 by Cambodia Action (then called SAO) as a project. Marie Hill was the project director from 1995-2001 when the project was localised. Today, Rajana is a Cambodian fair trade Art and Craft association registered with the government. You can read more about their work on their website.

Annual profits are used for investments, further training of staff in marketing, management, English, Japanese, Accounting and computer studies.

Why arts and crafts?

Rajana is the Khmer word for art, craft, design and handicrafts. Cambodia is noted for its artistic talent and this is expressed in art, drama and music. Today this potential is largely untapped and much was lost in Cambodia's troubled past.

How and where does Rajana work?

Rajana uses as much local raw materials and re cycled material as possible such as bamboo coconut, leaves, old bullets and bombs, silks and many others. Rajana mixes traditional and contemporary designs and patterns in its work making it unique to Cambodia. Rajana has two shops in Phnom Penh (one in and one near the Russian Market), two in Seam Reap (one in Pub Street near the Old Market) and one in Kampong Som near the coast.

Where are Rajana products made?

Rajana have workshops in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Other products are made in provinces throughout Cambodia. They support 130 families in villages by marketing their products. Rajana is proud to trade these products fairly and improve the lives of Cambodian people.

Staff are given opportunities to work with the Cambodian Church helping their own people. No church meetings are compulsory and creed does not affect work status.
