ICC - READ
The Bunong practice an animistic form of religion, and much of their daily life is centered around their swidden (slash and burn) farming system and appeasement of various spirits. Few Bunong engage in the cash economy. As Cambodia develops and opens to international trade, a multitude of new pressures are assailing this people group, threatening their unique cultural heritage and the future usage of their traditional forestlands. ICC wants to encourage the Bunong people to make educated and well informed decisions for their future.
The READ program aims to serve the Bunong people through developing and implementing a bilingual education program and improving the food production systems of local communities.
The Objectives:
- To develop a formally recognized Bunong orthography (writing system) to preserve this unique linguistic heritage and to facilitate the orthography's introduction into the national Khmer educational system.
- To establish a sustainable framework for the production of Bunong language materials. To develop a bilingual non-formal education program for the Bunong people, including a curriculum that addresses a wide variety of health and development issues.
- To provide training and technical assistance in the areas of animal health and production. To study the Bunong agricultural systems and learn of their strengths as well as potential areas for improvement.
- To support the Mondulkiri Provincial Department of Education and Department of Agriculture in order to increase their capacity to facilitate and contribute to sustainable development in their region.
